DAILY JOURNALING - PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT & SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES

As you embark on your journey of recovery, one of the most transformative steps you can take is to cultivate a relationship with a higher power. Whether you conceive of this higher power as God, a universal life force, or something more abstract, establishing this spiritual connection can provide an immense wellspring of strength, comfort, and guidance. When the path ahead seems daunting, when cravings threaten to derail your progress, or when the weight of your past mistakes feels overwhelming, turning to a power greater than yourself can offer a profound sense of refuge and reassurance. This relationship serves as an anchor, reminding you that you are not alone in your struggles and that there is a guiding light to follow, even in your darkest moments. As you deepen your spiritual practice through prayer, meditation, or simply quiet reflection, you open yourself up to receiving the wisdom, clarity, and purpose that can galvanize your recovery efforts. Many have attested that this connection with a higher power is not just beneficial, but essential. As you navigate the challenges of sobriety, do not hesitate to reach out and forge that sacred bond. It may very well become the most powerful ally in your quest for lasting freedom.

I share what I know from my own experiences. Following daily meditations, reading God's word, daily devotionals, prayer, and focusing on spiritual principles as a whole has been the most beneficial and rewarding piece of my recovery. Through every fear and tribulation, God made sure He was the only one I could call upon at those times. It was through building my faith that I gained strength in certain areas of my life that I never quite thought that I would. With self-discipline, willingness to surrender, and trust that God has far bigger plans for me, I was able to build a solid foundation for the rest of my life. Since reestablishing my faith, and making a conscience effort to continuously keep building it, I have been able to face obstacles with a completely different mindset; and without a sense of defeat. Things might not be great all the time, but He promises in the end they always will be. I have found it extremely helpful to show gratitude, even in the most troubling of times. Seeking out our blessings can help void out all the rest. I hope this message reaches all of you well!

Below you can find a few helpful tools I myself routinely utilize. If reading scripture and working on building a relationship with your higher power is something you remain closed off too no worries! You can also find a variety of journaling practices, writing prompts, and structured guides that can be used all on their very own!

  • Jesus Calling

    DAILY GUIDED SCRIPTURE

After many years of writing her own words in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to be more attentive to the Savior's voice and begin listening for what He was saying. So with pen in hand, she embarked on a journey that forever changed her—and many others around the world.

In these powerful pages are the words and Scriptures Jesus lovingly laid on her heart. Words of reassurance, comfort, and hope. Words that have made her increasingly aware of His presence and allowed her to enjoy His peace.

Jesus is calling out to you in the same way. Maybe you share the author’s need for a great sense of “God with you”. Or perhaps Jesus seems distant without you knowing why. Or maybe you have wandered farther from Him that you ever imagined you would. Here is a year’s worth of daily readings from Young’s journals to bring you closer to Christ and move your time with Him from monologue to a dialogue.

Each day is written as if Jesus Himself were speaking to you. Because He is. Do you hear Him calling?

YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE IT: MORNING & EVENING DAILY DEVOTIONALS

    Each devotion contains:

-a Bible verse to start your day

-a statement of truth to remember throughout your day

-space to write and release something back to God at the end of your day

-a prayer to receive before you go to sleep to better prepare for tomorrow

Without these crucial components woven into the routine of our harder seasons, connecting with the Lord can very quickly begin to feel overwhelming and like just another item on our to-do lists. Lysa understands this struggle and wants to create a sacred space where women can bookend their days with God by simply showing up, soaking in truth, and being reminded they're not alone on their healing journey. With You're Going to Make It you will:

-receive the biblical truth and encouragement you need when hurtful situations leave you worn out and unmotivated to spend time with God.

-escape the loneliness of trying to heal on your own with trusted wisdom from a Bible teacher and friend who understands your pain and wants to help you move forward.

-be reassured that though this difficult season is part of your story, it will not be your whole story.

This difficult season doesn't have to be a time of numbing the pain or going through the motions. Let this devotional help you get intentional and know that, though this may be a hard time, it can also be a holy time.

YOU MATTER

AFTER REPEDATIVE HARDSHIPS, TOXIC FRIENDSHIPS/ RELATIONSHIPS, TRAUMA, AND THE CONTINUED USE OF SUBSTANCES I STRUGGLED WITH MY SELF-WORTH AND VALUE TREMENDOUSLY! NOT ONE PERSON IS THE SAME. SO, MANY MAY FACE SIMILAR DEMONS. SOME MAY NOT. FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH, WE ARE ALL WORTH IT! BUT IT IS UP TO YOUTO REGAIN SIGHT OF THAT. BELIEVE IN IT. LIVE BY IT. AND CONTINUE TO ADD TO IT. TO SOME DEGREE WE HAVE ALL ALLOWED OUTSIDE FACTORS ( PEOPLE, PLACES, THINGS, SITUATIONS, ETC.) PLAY A ROLE AND DICTATE HOW WE REFLECT INWARDS ON OURSELVES. GOOD OR BAD. AT TIMES IT CAN BE A REAL CHALLENGE TO EVEN DECIPHER WHICH ELEMENTS IN YOUR LIFE FALL INTO EACH CATEGORY. WHEN WE FALL SHORT IN RECOGNIZING OUR IMPORTANCE AND EVERY ASPECT THAT MAKES US UNIQUELY SPECIAL AND BRILLIANT- IT HOLDS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A MAJOR HINDERING FACTOR IN OUR RECOVERY …. LIFE CONFLICTS, PEOPLE WE LOVE BRINGING US PAIN, FAILED / MISSED OPPERTUNITIES, DISAPPOINTMENTS, TRAGETY, ETC ARE INEVIDABLE. WE ALL ARE FORCED TO FACE THE FIRE AT SOME POINT IN LIFE. IT’S HOW YOU WALK THROUGH THAT FIRE THAT MATTERS MOST.”

sticky note reminder

Positive self-affirmations :

We can truly start to gain a newfound sense of self confidence & self-worth by starting with the simplest of methods. Speaking kindly to yourself…. I know sounded wacky to me at first too. But the shit works! Don’t knock it until you try it. Doesn’t need to be anything elaborate. When you make a point to say these short, simple, positive words of encouragement to yourself… you start to believe them. Once you believe it, your actions tend to corollate. “Thoughts become things.”

Do this daily. For however long, in whatever way works best for you. As you can see from the photo above, Nick helped me out a lot with this.

Sticky notes are one creative or fun way to do this. Writing down short motivational words to start each day, or a simple compliment you’re set to give yourself… write them down, and then start saying them out loud.

Ex: I am Beautiful. I am Strong. I am Loved. I am capable.

Whatever pertains to you personally that you know you could use a good daily reminder of on continuous basis.

Daily Journaling & Self Reflecting:

Writing of any sort; journaling, poetry, and blogging were all something that while still in active addiction I somehow strived to cling to. Reading and writing I know may not sound the most appealing to some, but then again nothing is not worth trying once. Right?

I journal every single day.

While homeless back in 2017; still actively using meth and heroin, bouncing between shelters and underpasses of bridges in Columbus IN, for some reason all I had were the clothes on my back and this Frozen notebook this 8-year-old little girl had given me, when I asked her for some paper.

I wrote in that notebook whenever I had the chance. About where I was, and what was going on in my daily life at that point. As most can assume, it wasn’t the most wholesome or pleasant. I kept that Frozen notebook with me till the day I was allowed to move out here to WI and start over. I kept writing in that journal until there wasn’t a page or line left in there.

At the time of active addiction did journaling get me sober? Was it in my magical tool? No. At least it wasn’t apparent at that time. I more or less considered myself a lost cause at that exact moment. I accepted and had come to the reality that I was more than likely waiting for the time when drugs completely ended my life. I wanted my family and my daughter to know where I was, and know some of the things I had incorporated in there; as I never would’ve gotten the opportunity to tell them myself. Writing in my eyes, holds great significance and value, no matter what the circumstance.

When you dedicate yourself to journaling and writing down your thoughts on a pretty regular basis it becomes a habit rather quickly. I still have that Frozen journal in my possession today. To look back as I have, and read some of those pages it’s bittersweet. I haven’t for a second forgotten what it felt like; or the memories attached to that specific time in my life. But it gives me great confidence in myself to physically see and recognize the strength and growth that has taken place over the course of these last several years. Realizing at one point in time, I was completely helpless, unable to take care of myself, and deemed a lost cause. It gives me all the more perseverance and motivation to continue moving forward with life currently. “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.”

Daily journaling has helped me in other areas as well. Areas that I feel others might be skeptical of. For what it’s worth, journaling has helped me deescalate my anger, and resulted in me thinking before I speak or act on my emotions. Being mindful of my tact/tone and how I responded to others and particular situations is a task I STRUGGLED with tremendously. But, truly I was able to learn, that not everything deserves a reaction from you all the time. Journaling and expressing myself through writing helped me create a safe space with no other contributing factors playing a part in how I filtered through processing my thoughts/feelings. I found I wasn’t compressing my feelings and thoughts nearly as much. I saw a major shift and change within myself. In time having writing as an outlet resulted in lessening my self-destructive behaviors and my overall piss poor attitude. I took note that most of my problems were handled in a much more effective and calming manner once I rationally thought through them, and gave myself the proper time and space to process them.

For those who have not opened themselves to this idea or practiced any form of writing I highly highly recommend giving it a go!
